BRIDGE RECTIFIERS – HOW THEY WORK – WHAT IS A DIODE – SEMI-CONDUCTORS - CONVERT AC VOLTAGES INTO DC
In this video from LearnElectrics we will take a simplified look at five volt power supplies and at the semiconductor diodes, rectifiers, and other devices that make up the module. In today’s electronic households, small power supplies are becoming more and more common. So how do they work?
Many questions have been asked - including …
How do bridge rectifiers work?
What is a diode and how does it work?
What is inside a five-volt power supply?
How should a bridge rectifier be connected?
Why are there capacitors in the power supply, and what do they do?
Power supplies and the components that make them will come in many shapes and sizes but understand this video and you will have the basic knowledg...

If you have your test meter set to the normal Zs test this will happen. Set your test meter to the NO-TRIP setting and it should clear this. Different meters mark the no trip test differently so check the user instructions with the meter or go online to the manufacturers website. Another top video, thankyou. Can I just ask then in reference to this when completing a certificate and it asks for the tabulated max Zs before your actual test reading, I’m assuming they want the max reading from the tables in 7671 and not the tables in the OSG?

    • @learnelectrics4402
      @learnelectrics4402 2 дня назад

Yes, tabulated is out of the Wiring Regs book. However I always write 80% in the top of column 12 on the schedule of circuit details, then write in the maximum permitted according to the OSG. That way, when I complete column 27 on schedule of test results, I can make a direct comparison. Anyone that knows what's-what when reading my paperwork will know what I have done. Hope this makes sense. This way you are not misleading anybody. Dave.

@@learnelectrics4402 Thank you. As I understand it my Garage consumer unit has a radial circuit with just the two MCBs, 16A (number 1)and 6A (number 2) - I have already installed additional sockets in line. I have now connected two 1.5mm cables to the 6A lights MCB with an outside light being wired separately and connected permanently through a FCU. As regards the sockets I presume it is also okay to connect two cables to the consumer unit as well? I have the choice of adding another socket from a socket in line but as I want this one close to the consumer unit I thought it would be better to wire it directly to the same 16A MCB (number 1) rather than use several yards of 2.5mm cable from around the other side of the garage. My question really is whether the regs permit two live wires into one MCB and two neutrals into position 1 on the neutral bar and two earths into position 1 on the earth bar.

Thank you so much for these videos, by far the clearest explanations I've seen. But just to clarify, if a lighting circuit has multiple points (e.g. several rooms each with a ceiling rose/ switch) presumably each and every one of the rooms needs to be tested for continuity at the ceiling rose and the switch as described in your video. If that is the case what R1+R2 reading is recorded, the highest?

Yes, correct. If the worst case passes the Zs requirements, then so do all the others. Thanks for watching. Dave.

Hi love the videos. Always come back to your content. Ok to ask a question tho. Client is upgrading to 3 phase from 2 phases in the application it asks for the kva. The upgrade is for 10 flats. Where would you get the figures for the equations if you don’t know what the main fuses will be. For example if you looking to fit a 315 amp 10 way distribution GFP10. Would you put 315 and 400 v ? Hope that’s clear enough. Thanks again

We don't run 2 phase circuits. either 3 phase or single phase. thanks for watching. Appreciated.

It would have been a great video if the mechanism by which bonding or not bonding causes shock picturially, then follow all the above video, like how a path for current to flow to the oil tank comes from and how that path possibly cause shock, lets say it come from the house through the ground to the tank then it has got to return to the house, if someone touches the oil tank nothing will happen and does touching the ground at some point go to the oil tank, or the oil tank already have live hot wire......

this is probably a stupid question but if in a radial current is travelling back on the live whats the neutral doing ?

    • @learnelectrics4402

Line is at 230 volts, neutral is the other side of the load at 0V

Its not travelling back, all the line cable is at 230V The neutral is on the other side of the load. Dave.

Good video again Dave. I take if for some reason you have already carried out your Ze then you have already proved continuity of the main earth and therefore the pfc tests would not require a test with the main earth removed? I’m lucky in that my mft gets all these results at once.
